Depending on its design, a motor may use a start capacitor, a run capacitor or both.
A faulty capacitor may cause the motor to buzz, struggle to start, run slowly, overheat, trip the electrical supply or blow a fuse. However, these symptoms can also be caused by a seized pump, damaged motor windings, an electrical supply problem or another faulty component.
A start capacitor provides additional starting torque for a short period while the motor accelerates.
A run capacitor remains connected while the motor operates and helps it run efficiently with the correct torque.
Start and run capacitors are not interchangeable. Always use the capacitor type specified for the motor and electrical circuit.
